Edward Brans appointed as professor of Sustainability and Environmental Liability

Environmental (liability) law expert Edward Brans has been appointed professor by special appointment of Sustainability and Environmental Liability at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance at Utrecht University as of 1 November 2020. Within this faculty, he will be part of the department of Constitutional Law, Administrative Law and Legal Theory and involved with the research programme of the Center for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law. Edward will also collaborate with other research groups and departments within Utrecht University.

Edward has been working at Pels Rijcken for almost 20 years. He is counsel since 2014. Edward focuses on environmental liability under private and administrative law. Besides that, he advises clients regarding themes like climate and energy transition, and sustainability. Edward has won his spurs in the scientific field. He obtained his PhD in 2001 at Erasmus University Rotterdam with a dissertation entitled "Liability for Damage to Public Natural Resources. Standing, Damage and Damage Assessment". He was a university lecturer in private law at VU Amsterdam and at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Edward still regularly publishes in academic and professional journals.

Edward combines his endowed professorship with his position at Pels Rijcken.
